Strong season finale secures Formula 4 team championship for STEP Motorsport

2. October 2023

Leo Robinson, Oscar Wurz, and Victor Nielsen all delivered solid performances in the final race of the year.

For the team’s two international drivers, it was another new track on the calendar, but they quickly got to grips with the layout of Jyllandsringen during Friday’s practice sessions. For Victor Nielsen, it was a joyful reunion with both the car and the track after missing a few races.

In qualifying, Leo Robinson was the best STEP driver, securing fourth place, while Oscar Wurz and Victor Nielsen took sixth and seventh.

Final weekends traditionally bring more hectic races, and this was no exception. Some turmoil at the start of the first heat allowed Victor Nielsen and Leo Robinson to move forward and claim second and third place, while Oscar Wurz finished fifth. However, he got his revenge in the next heat, achieving his best result so far with a second place, just ahead of Leo Robinson and Victor Nielsen.

The strong and consistent results in the first two heats earned the team every team owner’s dream: STEP Motorsport cars in the top three starting positions for the final heat of the year. However, a brief drizzle added some excitement to the race. A damp and slippery track meant some – including the three STEP drivers – went out on slick tires, while others opted for rain tires.

The rain tires turned out to be the right choice, at least for the first few laps, where all three STEP drivers saw their competitors pull away. But as the track dried, the order was shuffled once again.

The best result went to Leo Robinson, who secured another second place despite a determined pursuit of the leader. Victor Nielsen finished fourth, while Oscar Wurz ended the season in seventh.

Leo Robinson also took home a trophy for third place in the Rookie Championship—a remarkable achievement, considering he only participated in half of the season.

Team manager Morten Dons himself stood on the podium as the winner of the 2023 Formula 4 Team Championship, and he was pleased after the weekend’s three races:

-A weekend like this is what drives us: three drivers who have developed and are competing at the top of the field. Leo joined us a month ago at Ring Djursland and was competitive right from the start. I had really hoped he could get a win today – but he’s shown he has great potential, and I’m happy to have had a driver like him with us, says Morten Dons, continuing:

-Oscar has similarly grown with the task since his debut at Padborg Park two weeks ago and delivered some good races today. He is a fast driver who works really hard to improve, and with that mindset, he can go far!

-And it was great to have Victor back in the team, and despite being away from the car for a while, he also delivered some strong results. It’s a good season finish that I hope can help propel him to the next step in his career.

As the newly crowned Team Championship winner, Morten Dons has no doubt about why they succeeded:

-Above all, you need drivers who can compete at the top. But drivers need cars that can perform well all the way to the checkered flag, and an environment that provides them the peace and opportunity to grow. I’m proud of our small team and all the people who share the passion and ambition to elevate the next generation of racing drivers to an international level, says the team manager, adding:

-A big thanks to everyone in and around the team for a fantastic effort this year. I’m grateful for the hard work put into maintaining a high standard on and off the track.

As one season ends, the next has already begun. STEP Motorsport is already organizing test days for potential new drivers for 2024.
